Accomodations

DUBA PLAINS CAMP | DUBA PLAINS PRIVATE RESERVE

The renowned Duba Plains Camp sits in the heart of classic Okavango Delta habitat. A matrix of palm-dotted islands, flood plains and woodland, the 77,000-acre private concession typifies the region’s unique landscape. Located here, exclusively, is the six tent Duba Plains Camp, a wildlife connoisseur’s getaway. Built on a wooded island, connected to the prolific wildlife area by an elaborate set of bridges, the camp is the base of many famous wildlife documentaries by National Geographic filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert. It is the only camp on the concession, thereby offering guests the ultimate opportunity for private sightings. Duba Plains Camp, and the Kwedi Reserve, where it is located, is part of a joint venture partnership between Great Plains Conservation and the Okavango Community Trust, the representative body for five villages in the Okavango Panhandle. This partnership ensures that these communities received tangible and substantial benefit from using their ancestral land for wildlife conservation. Botswana is a leader in such partnerships, and Duba Plains is a long-standing example of success in this area. The intimate camp consists of six traditional-style tents on raised decking, each with views of the surrounding floodplain. Each tent has a small desk and private verandah plus en-suite facilities consisting of flush loo, double basins and indoor shower. Ceiling fans and careful design maintain comfortable climate for rest and relaxation. The main area is under thatch and consists of a large raised dining room, cozy bar and comfortable lounge. Extending from this main area is a raised wood deck with pool and a dining area, where brunch is often served under the shade of large African ebony trees. In the evenings, the fire pit is always a popular spot to enjoy an Amarula and recount the day’s events. Duba Plains prides itself on its extraordinary wildlife experiences, and rightly so. The mammoth interaction between large buffalo herds and Duba’s lion prides retains its lure, but with the increase in water in the last decade, this homogenous experience is now complemented by reliable sightings of a diverse range of species, including large herds of Red lechwe along with Blue wildebeest, Greater kudu, tsessebe and usually a rare visitor to Duba, but now more common, giraffe. Of course, elephant and hippo trudge through the swamps happily, and are regularly seen. Leopard, and some nocturnal species, can be sighted as well. Wildlife is a regular sight right in camp, or even from the outdoor showers! Birds abound, and the area is reputed as a birdwatcher’s paradise. Okavango ‘specials’ include the rare Wattled crane, Pel’s Fishing owl, White-backed Night heron and Marsh owl.

Rooms

SUITES
The intimate camp consists of five traditional-style tented suites, all on raised decking, each with views of the surrounding floodplain and the steady stream of wildlife parading past. Each suite has a lounge area, with place to write and do your photographic downloads, as well as the opportunity for private dining in your suite. Each has a private verandah plus beautifully appointed en-suite facilities consisting of flush loo, double basins and indoor and outdoor showers and luxurious baths. Fans and careful design maintain comfortable climate for rest and relaxation. Guests can enjoy their own private plunge pool and outdoor under cover sala/day rest area.

SELINDA CAMP | SELINDA RESERVE

Selinda Camp is located in the 320,000 acre Selinda Reserve of northern Botswana along the eastern banks of the Selinda Spillway, near the confluence of the Linyanti, Savute and Kwando Rivers. At the peak of dry season, this concession boasts elephants by the thousands and regular sightings of the Selinda pack of African wild dogs. Set under an impressive thatch structure, Selinda’s décor is centered on the four elements of air, water, fire and earth with art by Keith Joubert. The camp’s has nine tented rooms are cooled by thatch, and expansive with large en-suite bathrooms and private verandahs. It is a very careful blend of humble bush camp with some extra bells ‘n’ whistles, making for a home away from home atmosphere. This careful mix makes Selinda Camp a popular favorite. Each of Selinda Camp’s eight spacious, sturdy canvas tents is shaded with thatch roofing and raised on wooden decks with a large private verandah for a slice of one’s own private Africa. Each tent has a small seating area and desk. Selinda’s little surprise is the extended en suite dressing and dual basin vanity area and bathroom complete with a deep stone bath and antique shower. One of the tents is a family unit, consisting of one main bedroom, a kid’s room and two bathrooms connected by a wrap-around deck. Selinda’s commanding main lounge and dining area is raised with views of the Spillway. Nearby is the large walk-in wine cellar and art gallery as well as the curio shop. After the day’s events, the pool is a welcome respite, and then a drink around the fire pit rounds out the day. Great Plains Conservation came to Selinda Reserve in 2007, reclaiming this magnificent area from the shadows of hunting, and placing all the acreage under photographic tourism. Recent census (2012) shows an overall increase in wildlife, of considerable amount, and Selinda and its guests are a key component of this conservation success. A patchwork of microhabitats, Selinda Reserve hosts a staggering diversity of wildlife. The open plains are an ideal habitat for cheetah and the thicker woodlands are refuge for leopard. It is famous for elephant and lion, wild dog and hippo, buffalo and giraffe and the more rarely seen roan and sable. Some days we will spend hours with a single herd of elephants; other days we may track predators, or wait in a hide for Slaty egrets to arrive and fish. Each winter we wait hopefully for the Selinda pack of African wild dogs to pick their den, which is often near camp. The Selinda Reserve is west (upstream) from Savute Channel and Chobe, so it has all the advantages of both of those famous areas but with the tremendous advantage of exclusivity. It is a truly spectacular and unique landscape.
